| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 12 notes) | | | Tasted by BYOB on 1/23/2010 & rated 93 points: Dark red, bursting with intense ripe cherry and rasberry fruit. Balanced with firm tannins and a hint of spice. Bravo Italia! (143 views) | | | Tasted by MattJ on 11/9/2009 & rated 95 points: This had a wow fruit filled nose, excellent balance and a very long finish that got better with time in the decanter. I see where the other TN's are coming from with typicity although I would have still guessed Brunello. Regardless this is great juice so who really cares? My first venture into Gaja and while I've always thought his Piedmont wines overpriced, I'm willing to bet that they are very good. But any suggestion of sangiovese is, at least this early point in its evolution, totally hidden behing a giant wall of new oak. It tastes like a mixture of a vanilla and a chocolate milkshake. Obviously made in the international modern syle, but where's the soul? Is it just too young? I'll never know because I won't reload at this price point. Mid-full bodied with excellent texture, rich fruit, minerality, soft tanins and balancing acidity. Very long finish. A great brunello to drink over the next 10 years. Tasted harsh and bitter. Eventually had to admit this was corked - really wanted to believe this just needed air - finally had to concede defeat. Really disappointed, my first bottle was so good - but still have 4 left! I'll just try it once more - faintest hint of something. but no, this will now have to go down the sink. Hey ho! (1448 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 3/3/2009 & rated 95 points: This is some magic juice. Not old school brunello, yet really more than the new interpretations. I decanted for about 4 hours and was rewarded with some truly amazing stuff. For me, some of the best I've ever had. Only wish I had more. (1692 views) | | | Tasted by peetee on 11/28/2008 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous mixture of violets sour cherry and licorice with warming flavours of all these plus spices, blackcurrants and tobacco. So much going on but the overall sense is of a silky smooth mouthfeel and lingering exotic flavours. It has fantastic balance. The colour showed surpisiing maturity, deep plum core with some brick red hues on the rim. Very special wine. (1707 views) | | | Tasted by cos82 on 6/19/2008 & rated 94 points: Outstanding at the moment and sure to get better. Dark purple plum. A beautiful nose of cherry, plum, earth with floral elements. Big on the palate with cherry, black currants, licorice, crushed stones and earth. Some tannin to resolve, but otherwise balanced. I can't wait to see how this wine drinks in 3-5 years when I will open the next one. I would be surprised if it didn't merit several more points. Not your typical Brunello, but very fine nonetheless. (2043 views) | | | Tasted by ewineguy on 5/31/2008 & rated 96 points: There was an incredible lunch served at the Post Hotel Wine Summit at Lake Louise Alberta Canada on Saturday May 31st. There were plenty of wines served with the Tartlet of Leek with Black Truffle White Wine Chive Sauce, Medallions of Veal Tenderloin with Porcini and dry sack Veal Jus Risotto and Chinese Broccoli, and Chilled Rhubarb Soup with Raspberry Sorbet. While still enjoying the veal, a wonderful 2001 Sugarille Brunello was poured and we soon forgot about the lackluster Limoux offering. This Brunello was beautiful in the glass on the nose and in the mouth. Dark inky purple that a great painter would find impossible to match. The aromas were abundant and perfectly balanced, with a nice BBQ smoke essence including some spicy kindling, maybe some thyme, dried cherries or dried berries, saddle leather after a brief rain, and some floral. It was nutty and big and luscious and chewy and peppery but oh so smooth. It was perfect with the veal, but the several of us kept demanding it till way past desert. I am looking for this beauty. (2074 views) | | | Tasted by Claudio161 on 2/25/2008 & rated 94 points: Binny's South Loop Gaja Tasting (Binny's South Loop Chicago Illinois): Color: Medium red wine but no orange bricking on the rim. A younger looking wine than the Rennina. Nose: Some auto body shop smells (but in a good way!), new car smell?, fresh leather, strong red fruits, more powerful than the Rennina of the same year. Weird aspect - seemed to suck the air out of the glass - like a vacuum. Raspberry notes started to come out as well. Constantly evolving - notes were fleeting and changing - very very interesting wine! Taste: Simply amazing and balanced. Hazelnuts, fruits, toasted oak vanillins, awesome finish. Overall: a 94+ point wine. Needs a little more time - but holy cow! No I know what I want to add to my Christmas wish list!!! (2444 views) | | | Tasted by Kdawg on 2/25/2008 & rated 97 points: Gaja Seminar (Binny's South Loop, chicago IL): nose: huge, dark nose filled with black plum, black currants, red currants, dark cherry, tar, spice notes, and bits of black licorice. This is a "wow" nose that is massively expressive
taste: extremely silky feel on the palate with loads of dark plum, black currant, black licorice, red currants, dark cherry, and juniper spices
overall: an amazing wine, just amazing. Everything about this wine is deep and expressive. Long silky finish with very firm tannins this wine is tremendous right now and can get tons better (2638 views) |

About red wine
SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-veh-zeh"). Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
