From Catena's very good single-appellation series, this is a fairly soft Cab from Agrelo, in Mendoza, known in part for soft Cabs from vines planted in clay and loam. There isn't the sort of nervy, electric tension one finds in higher-altitude Argentinean wine, nor is there all that much complexity, but, now well into its prime and with just enough structure to keep everything upright, it's an approachable Cab expression with an initially dusty nose leading to notes of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, tart pomegranate riding the light wave of acidity, well-integrated oak-derived notes of vanilla, butterscotch, and cinnamon, vague herbal-floral elements, and, as it opens more, an almost Syrah-like meaty note. Again, the emphasis is on overall softness, but it's not at all flabby, and the oaky notes add complementary warmth.

Green and a sensation of underripe tannins while a mix of jammy fruit. Schizophrenic and odd. An all right wine in need of some food to land.

Subtle but noticeable tanins. Very heavy on the blackberry and coco with undertones of leather and shortbread. A very good wine for the price.

Decent wine in the Bordeaux style. Lighter than most new world but with more tannic grip than I was expecting given the lighter body.
