Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): slightly reductive for the first hour after it was popped-and-poured. With more air this came across as slightly more ripe/ opulent vs typical for Raveneau, but an excellent oystershell, mineral-driven, crunchy finish that really showcases power. Give this more time in the cellar.
Birthday Celebration (Paris Club - Chicago IL): Open ~30 minutes before serving. Normally I would have decanted this bottle, so not sure why I didn't tonight. Slightly reductive start, no surprise for Raveneau. Really hit its stride with 15-30 minutes in glass, this was at its absolute best at the very last sip, 3+ hours after the bottle was opened. Lots of yellow apple, lemon and lemon peel on nose and palate, with some lemon curd flavors as well. Very impressive density, weight and length. Good tonight, but I would expect this to really shine 2020 forward.
7 Vintages of Raveneau Valmur 2000 to 2007 (ex 2003) (Vin, Vino, Wine): Meyer lemon nose, deeply scented with sea brine, iodine and minerals. Very classic Raveneau nose, it just draws you in. The palate has more sweet than sour, but there is a refreshing austerity to the fruit that clenches up the finish, saves the wine and belies the vintage. Really deep and flavorful with a lot of dry extract, but on balance the sweetness wins out over the sour and you don't get that wonderful balance in the best years that just dances on forever on your palate. Ranked 3rd out of 7, tying with the 2004.
