Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 42 notes)

Tasted by La Turque on 11/17/2009 & rated 93 points: Two flights, ranked in order of performance:

1997 Ornellaia - Beautiful, sublime, sexy wine. Drinking incredibly well. Impeccable balance.
1997 Pavie-Macquin - despite what one might think of the 1997 vintage in Bordeaux, this wine was brilliant.
1997 Beringer Private Reserve - A perennial favourite.
1997 Lafite Rothschild - A barnyardy nose, which blew off with time. Great pedigree and structure. Lay down for 5 years.

1991 Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque - my personal favourite of the tasting. A brilliant, complete wine - my favourite wine ever!
1998 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde - a beautifully made, delicious wine
1998 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle - Probably the only really good La chapelle made since the 1990 in my view
1996 Chateau de Fonsalette Reserve Cuvee Syrah - my second favourite of teh flight. Deep, dark, sweet, thick, amazing

All wines showed beautifully, and were drinking well. (252 views)

Tasted by Kevin H on 10/24/2009 & rated 87 points: A bit stewed on the nose - plums, game and black tea aromas. Medium weight, some gamey fruit, amber showing already, tastes mature. Drink up. (599 views)

Tasted by Serge on 9/13/2009: Zeegirl on 10/1/2008 nailed it. Got better and better with time in the glass, complexity was enormous and now I MUST find it in the stores. If you like Northern Rhone, don't miss this beauty. (610 views)

Tasted by EricBe on 7/15/2009 & rated 86 points: Funky and tart upon opening, this did actually open up pretty well. I wouldn't drink it straight (tart), but with food (roast beef, tomatoes), it worked OK. (963 views)
Tasted by sperkins on 7/12/2009 & rated 91 points: (722 views)
Tasted by Plusvini on 5/16/2009 & rated 92 points: Nose of blackberry liqueur, bacon and spice. Medium bodied palate with a bit of earthiness, well balanced with lots of fine tannins lingering on the finish. Lots of life left. She who likes Barolos liked this wine a lot. (1129 views)

Tasted by Anonymous on 1/2/2009 & rated 93 points: drank after decanting for 60min, over 3 hrs. beautiful and just getting better with time (1717 views)
Tasted by kgh on 12/25/2008 & rated 88 points: Medium body wine with somewhat thin mouthfeel. Ribe berry fruit still prominent on palate and short finish. Drank over several hours, and improved with time to open up. (1588 views)
Tasted by Art_Vandelay on 11/30/2008 & rated 91 points: Medium intensity in the glass with a ruby/garnet core. Reasonable intensity on the nose with a leathery spice, ripe red fruits and roasted red pepper. On the palate - medium to full-bodied with a savoury character and an appealing tartness. Should develop well over the long haul. (1655 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 11/29/2008: Hermitage La Chapelle Wine-Pages Offline (Vinoteca, Smithfield, London): More more like 92, a little tighter but spicy, plummy fruit. Slightly more marked acidity on entry. Black fruits. Ok, needs time I think. Might be better than 94 in long run but in a lighter style. **(*)1/2 (1636 views)
Tasted by GlennK on 11/29/2008 & rated 91 points: Dark berries on the nose with some underbrush and a touch of leather. You can feel the youthfulness on the palate as the tannins are providing a solid backbone to the fruit while maintaining a nice balance and elegance. Could turn out to be a special bottle in the future. 91++ (1667 views)
Tasted by pll4 on 11/18/2008 & rated 92 points: After a couple of hours it opened up revealing anise, caramel, raspberries, smoked meat, and a hint of olive brine on the nose...a bit hollow mid-palate, but a nice long finish...tannins are resolved. Not sure if this will get any better with time. Give it a decant and drink up. (1884 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 11/16/2008 & rated 86 points: The Blind Drunks monthly tasting (Rich & Dana's): Color shows some age at the rim. Notes of red fruit, tobacco and spice box. Flavors of sweet red fruit, tobacco, spice and herbs, developing a beef jerky quality toward the end. (394 views)
Tasted by Squirreljam on 10/26/2008 & rated 92 points: Impression only from a restaurant dinner - Nice wine that developed well with time in the glass. After maybe half an hour, there's a distinctive nose with eucalyptus or menthol. Nicely weightless in the mouth, still has presence. Notes of plum with a hint of cooked fruit and earth. Nice balance of structure - while this isn't a blockbuster, the overall balance and mix of flavors make it a very nice wine with dinner. (1803 views)
Tasted by Zeegirl on 10/1/2008 & rated 93 points: This wine is a conundrum because of the disparity between the tasting notes of RP vs. WS. Which makes it a great wine to talk about now that it has 10 years on it. Opened a magnum ( yeah I i know magnums take longer to mature) recently. Seemed a super flabby at the outset, but after some exposure to "N2 O2 Ar CO2" et. al. it really started to emerge in a surprising way that was quite complex and full of perfumed layers of flavor. I think it has surprises in store after alot more cellaring. Ain't gonna open my other magnum for at least 5 years or so. (1823 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 9/22/2008: Hermitage La Chapelle, 10 vintages incl 1990. TWS Tasting (Merchant Taylors' Hall, London): Paler, hint of swimming pool on the nose. Quite light, some spice and fruit on the attack. Reasonably developed. Lacks complexity I think. Only moderate length. Structure is acidity dominated. Seemingly light. On revisiting this is quite deceptive - more to it than first seemed, but nonetheless I don't think this is one of the greats. *** (1897 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 9/15/2008 & rated 93 points: Decanted for about 2 1/2 hours. Dark garnet color. Brash nose of cinnamon, leather, plums, and char. Medium-bodied with chiseled layers of deftly-defined brambly red fruits, spicecake, coffee, and mineral notes. I felt there was some refreshing acidity to the wine, plus filed off tannins and a truly lovely finish with some echoes of fruit and grip. A slight injection of oakiness did not detract. Delicious and complex charmer. (1806 views)
Tasted by Ericdwar on 8/17/2008 & rated 88 points: Bright cherry red wine, with clear rim. Nose is of farmyard, pencil lead, & alcohol. Taste is pleasant, fruit forwardwith good acidity; sharp cherry & red fruits especially. Midling finish. Good overall, but not yet ready. (1478 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 5/11/2008 & rated 93 points: Light brownish red, orange rim. Viscous tears form gothic arches in the glass. Very complex and distinctive, graphic nose: Herbs, pine and eucalyptus. Smoke, tar and liquorice. Slightly cooked dark fruit with some perfume. Overtones of violets and other flowers. Horse manure, gravel and undergrowth. Lean, smooth taste with fresh acids and softened tannins. Medium concentration and aftertaste. To our surprise it is not very powerful, instead a wine of great finesse, more like an elegant Côte-Rôtie. Ready to drink. Excellent with slow food. (2707 views)
Tasted by ikiesewetter on 3/29/2008: Dried fruit, raisins in nose, some strawberry notes, clean & sweet on palate, great extraction, some earthy notes. (3007 views)

Regional History: Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Rousanne, and Viognier.
• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
