  • Top shoulder. Cork was saturated. Wine was technically sound. Definitely past it’s prime but this 40 year old is holding up really well. Stewed plum fruit and worn leather mixing with mint, green pepper, mushroom, soy and brine. A soft, rounded texture and enough spine to hold it up. Neither alcohol nor acid sticking out. Fruit is tired a little on the palate, but still pumping through the finish. A solid Pomerol from a tougher year in BDX. Drink up.

  • High shoulder, excellent provenance. Decanted, but could have been just popped and poured. Sweet fruit, chewy body, savory Merlot. I think the cab franc helped this to age and maintain its character.

  • From a $30 K&L purchase, slightly low fill (TS). Holding up well, quite lush and almost silky. Plummy with a touch of soy and black olive. Has something in common with an '81 La Conseillante we had last week, but rough around the edges comparatively.

  • I have scored this wine low, because on an objective level it is well past it's best, light on the palette and little more coming through. BUT I like it personally. Maybe it's where wine becomes subjective, when in your mind you like a wine without any logic, there is something you like about it. This is the case with the Certan Giraud. I have had the 82, 90 and 98 and loved them all, now have the 81, 83, 90 and 98 to drink, and looking forward to each bottle... logically, illogically or otherwise.

  • Decanted and poured. Light garnet on the pour, darkening to reddish brown in the glass. Lovely nose of tobacco leaf, leather and a little bit of spice box. Mostly secondary on the palate, with tobacco, leather and a little currant peaking through. Not much fruit left. Lush mouthfeel, and medium finish. A little past its peak perhaps, however it showed much better than Parker predicted.
