Part of 5 vintage vertical of 97, 99, 01, 02, 04: ranked #2 decanted about 1 hour after opening and served 45 minutes after decanting. Bigger toasty nose, more minty. Leaner on the palate and more concentrated, a little more closed compared to the 1997, and showing a higher alcohol level on the palate. Really sweet on the palate with a little vanilla on the finish.

opened around 20 minutes before dinner. Ripe and jammy as expected, with some oaky notes, a little metallic and iron rust. Very nice and fragrant. Still very metallic more than an hour later.

Pristine bottle, cork disintegrated on opening. Last tasted on Christmas Eve 2007. The fragrant, smoky nose retains all of its complexity in a more subtle way, with beautiful lift from the Viognier; the palate has simmered down too, and has traded its youthful richness and exuberance for a more restrained and gentle character, with delicate grip from sandy tannins and well-integrated, fresh acidity; the finish displays the Viognier element of the wine, with touches of apricot, length is very good. Fully mature.

This has settled down a lot. Still some years to go but I’d drink them now. I don’t see how they could improve
