  • Cherry red with fading at the edges. Plums and cherries on the nose. Rich and precise on the palate with a bit of harshness. Roast meats, cherry, blackberry. Tannins are a bit harsh. Good acidity and balance. Finishes long and sharp. Still alive but it's seen better days. Drink up.

  • Bought a bottle during the holiday sale just on a flyer. Was curious what a 13 year old syrah tasted like. Boy, for relatively low expectations this was a solid wine. A beautiful nose, right at cork pop and the color was still quite dark; just a little orange around the edge. The taste was not quite up to the nose, but still jammy fruit and lots of flavor. No real zing on the finish, but tannins are firm. Impressive.

  • 2003 Syrah/Shiraz (Tasted Blind) (Rich and Peggy's House, Los Altos, California): Very fruity. Tasted blind.

  • I'm going to pull one sentence to highlight from my previous note: I wish the finish matched the potential of this wine. Liquid hickory smoke and blackcurrant preserves are nice in any case, but this is merely good overall.

  • Pop and pour. Effusive nose of pumice, graphite, pine forest, bacon and blackberry liquor. Flavor akin to a bacon-wrapped pepper steak with black fruit reduction, with no heat on the palate. This is not an overcooked wine: despite the intense flavors, it actually retains a silky subtlety. I wish the finish matched the potential of the wine. If some tannins come forth with air and bring this some length, this will amount to one of the great QPR Syrah scores of all time... and this is surely a nice wine in any case. Day 2: about the same, just a few building, sweet, fine tannins but still a disappointing finish on an otherwise nice wine. The nose knows. 87-88 points, with an acknowledgment that I'm feeling the need to re-legitimize the whole concept of 87 as a very good and recommended wine. This is definitely worth $20.
