  • Almost surely fraudulent, alas - a 2.25L bottle with the Pillet-Will label yet "Mis en bouteille au chateau" stamped on it and a back label stating "ce vin doit etre decante 5 heures", reportedly a favorite of Rodenstock. If legitimate, it simply didn't give the experience that many Bordeaux of this age usually do - when the terroir and vintage are great and when the bottle is in good shape, at least. Pencilly, spicy, treacle nose; woody. Mellow fruit palate with woody, metallic notes; austere yet with a curiously (suspiciously) opaque robe.

  • Drunk at McKays Steakhouse at the American Club Hong Kong - The problem with legendary bottles such as this is that their reputation precedes them and as such there is a huge amount of expectation that surrounds the build up. So was it worth it? This is not in the league of the '45 Mouton or the '47 Cheval, or at least this bottle wasn't. Or maybe this wine is no longer at that level, it is, after all nearly 50 years senior to those two. To be very clear for a 118 year old wine it was in excellent condition and it was very enjoyable. Part of that enjoyment is no doubt being part of history but a significant part of it was the weight and structure that this wine still retains to this day. There is fruit and there is sweetness, although the sweetness did fade in the glass after a couple of hours. We didn't decant this initially, over concerns that it may be too fragile. That was wrong and so after the first pour the rest of the bottle was decanted and that assisted the wine to open and take on more complexity. I am privileged to have been able to try this wine but I won't go searching for it in the same way I have for other 'legends'.

  • It was of course a privilege to taste this (from magnum). But this particular bottle would have been better a few decades ago. The colour was fine and no off flavours. She was easy to drink, but just had a bit less of everything than there should have been.

  • Warning to anyone who might have this wine or be looking to buy. Probably a fake. See article:

  • With a perfume that was sensed from all four corners of the large, well appointed dining room, this legendary bottle of 1900 Chateau Margaux announced itself. Truffles, tobacco, floral, earth, sweet cherry and cedar aromatics bathed your nose. The wine offered a unique sensation, perfectly combining elegance, concentration and a light touch. Silk, satin and velvet textures played in your mouth, while ripe, spicy cherries, pipe tobacco, fresh strawberry and cassis flavors lingered on your palate. Everything was as it should be. This was my first experience with liquid history. With luck, it won’t be my last.
