  • level lowermost neck, perfect cork, decanted 2hrs, nearly opaque, youthful colour, even hints of purple, lovely floral (violets) classic elegant Margaux nose, real concentration on the palate, some dry hardness still at the finish, long, this is surprisingly youthful, fine now but still with some upside potential, remarkable for its age

  • One of those days… the bottle of Riesling I considered as aperitif tasted off, the rosé I chose as substitute was awkward, moving on to red the Barolo I had already decanted in the morning did not satisfy me... thankfully, this fourth bottle made my day!

Bought on auction about three weeks ago. Top shoulder, cork soaked, light seepage, otherwise in good condition. Still dark ruby in colour. Dark fruit, red fruit, blackberry, black currant, plum, boysenberry, raspberry, graphite, cedar, leather, tobacco, chocolate, dirt, and spices, with good acidity, mostly resolved tannin, and very good length. with Initially the wine shows some 1988 rusticity and tannic dryness, but it softens and becomes smoothly textured and quite harmonious with 45 minutes of aeration in a small decanter. Good structure, concentration and complexity. The wine seems to have seen a good amount of new oak during its maturation, but it is well integrated after all the years. Aging well. Drink now, and for another five years at least.

NB: I did not realize that I drank a bottle of this wine from a different source less than six months ago. Comparing notes, this bottle was less balsamic, and after some aeration also less rustic and more accessible and rewarding than the other bottle from the other source.
