Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 10 notes)

Tasted by prettydeceextrap on 1/29/2010: C+ ... This wine wasn't light, it was lacking. After about 3 hours, some fruit started to come out, thought it never became more than average. The nose was promising, with some slightly herbal and sweet notes. At first, zero fruit up front. The finish was always balanced and smooth, with some cream and light tartness. Overall, I think the wine probably "made it," but was never destined for greatness. If you have them, definitely drink them now while they can still at least be drinkable. (82 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 11/30/2009 & rated 92 points: Mr. Mike's Odd Tasting: Old California Cabernets & Blends (John's Marketplace, Portland, OR): Surprisingly bold and firm, with chewy tannins and some "Rutherford Dust" characteristics. Blackberry fruit is smooth and lush, with additional flavors of earth and olives. The CT drinking window is way off...this has another 4-5 years in it. (256 views)
Tasted by cjstrunk on 7/17/2009 & rated 93 points: Wow, even I thought this would be past prime..WRONG.

Brick color, edar notes, but not old by any means. If you have one, try it. It's stunning. (507 views)
Tasted by www.westconcordliquors.com on 4/12/2009 & rated 90 points: reddish brown in color now. The cork broke but the wine was fine. I would recommend decanting for two hours. Upon opening nose was very closed, slight medical tape smell. After an hour or so in the glass the nose started to come arond a little bit with heavy tobacco, celery and plum. Smooth texture in the mouth, medium acidity, low tannins. Medium weight weight in the mouth. Many people would call this wine "light" compared to the wines being produced today. This wine is still pretty juicy after a couple hours of air. Black currant smells persist on mid palate. Long, smooth, slight sour finish. This wine is past it's prime but if you are a fan of older wines, this wine is still great.....if you can find it on sale. (671 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 3/14/2008 & rated 94 points: Really pretty wine. My first Bella Oaks and hard not to measure it against the yardstick of Martha's Vineyard - this comes close in finesse to the '80s-era Martha's I've been drinking but is much lighter in material; I can understand why some people commented it's at its peak. Interestingly, for the first glass of this it finished with an evocative fresh mint-leaf note that reputation would normally ascribe to Martha's, but it was more vivid to me here than it's ever been there. But then it goes away and reveals a perfectly integrated mature cabernet with no rough edges, very gratifying to drink and we finished every drop. (1145 views)
Tasted by win on 10/14/2006 & rated 86 points: Blind Birthday Tasting (Win's House - Texas): Bottle No. 3331, bottled March 1998 of a total of 51,360 bottles and 1200 Magnums. Actually, a bit disappointing & past its prime. (Sooners) (2255 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 8/20/2006 & rated 88 points: drink up as it is on the downside of the curve. A tad disappointing to be honest. (1833 views)
Tasted by mmyette on 4/17/2006 & rated 91 points: Peaking now, this cabernet was smooth, with cherry, black currant, white pepper, and vanilla oak on the palate, well-balanced with a moderate finish. A touch thin in the late middle. But hard to complain. Beautiful wine. (2079 views)
Tasted by Norman on 11/27/2005 & rated 86 points: a bit thin, past its prime. (2268 views)
Tasted by Lrucker on 9/15/2005 & rated 92 points: Very nice wine. Smooth with no bitterness, nice finish. Medium bodied. (2308 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
