Rather as javachip described the wine in his 2001 note. This still has good colour and enough fruit, but it is clear fading and there is that bitter note at the finish. Very old vines and of course this is in good condition for a 20 year old Zinfandel........

Fill into neck; perfect capsule and cork. Decanted 30 minutes before tasting. Clear deep rich blood-ruby-garnet, lightening at the rim. Bouquet of smoky incense, musk, and grilled meat. On the palate, the fruit was faded, dried, and and faintly bitter, actually better the next day under vacuum stopper.

9 Famous Zinfandels with some age on them. (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Lots of spice, dust, and forest floor, lots of berry taste on the palate, silky texture, soft tannins, needs 3 to 5 years to peak, long, long finish. My #2 of 9.
