John comes to town! (Amali (115 E 60th Street, NY, NY)): How can one not love D'Yquem? And yet I'd say this wasn't exactly showing as well as some others that we've had. It's definitely good - loads of different flavors and paired very well with a citrus cheesecake the restaurant had on the menu, but with D'Yquem my expectations are to be blown away and this didn't quite do that.
Notes from second day. Rich aroma of apricot. Unctuous mix of complex flavors that I won't even try to describe. Full, lingering finish, which is equally complex, equally delicious, and has in the mix an unusual taste of sawdust along with more conventional flavors including apricot pit.
Vertical tasting 2003, 2000 & 1996 in HK Vinexpo. 2000 is golden color; nose of fantastic tropical fruits, pear, pineapple. More young, smooth and fresh than 2003. Very long finish. I am glad I tried it at this tasting. Excellent for now.
