  • Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): From a 375. Pours a deep golden color. What an interesting wine! I have never had one of these with much age and it's quite a bit different. You get some of that carmelization and maybe almost fruit compote. In the beginning it's almost maybe a touch sweeter, but with some time that seems to shift away. Really interesting.

  • Tasted blind. Deep orange color. The group of very seasoned tasters, including an MW zoned in on this quite quickly and called the bottle. The nose had a strong lemon peel top note which was immediately followed by classic Sauternes aromas around smoke, lanolin, cedar wood, saffron, botritis visible. The palate felt slightly off dry but the wine is apparently dry. The puzzle was a nose that screamed sauternes, but a dry palate, so it had to be a dry Sauternes and there aren't that many old ones. The 1966 was richer and riper, the 1968, from a lean vintage had less botritis aromas but more lemon peel, orchard fruit. Both wines were not my style at all but it was a real treat to sample such old dry Sauternes. Thanks to the host for thoughtfully sourcing these.

  • Truly, it was a treat to taste the oldest bottle I've ever seen of Ygrec. On the nose, it reminds of a lighter, lesser vintage of Yquem, without a lot of botrytis. Apricot, orange, honeysuckle, tangerine and spicy, orange tea defines the nuances. Not quite sweet, with a jolt of acidity, the wine has heft, sweet, orange honey and hints of orange tropical fruit on the palate. I wish I had more of this in my cellar.
