"In Case it's the End of the World" Dinner (L'Envol Restaurant, St. Regis Hotel, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): From the 'prestige' selection at "L'Envol. Museum collection that had been re-corked at the winery. Rather over-reverentially treated by the sommelier, I thought. Lightly and fully transparent dusky velvet red colour. Nose is reticent...'roast beef' (not sure what I meant by that) and light, lifted water-based perfume. Palate is dominant high acidity, thin and weedy, not much fruit but nothing in its place. Little length or resonance. Weedy. The other three raved about this, so I'm sorry that I didn't 'get' it, Eric.

Opened the bottle an hour before consuming, no decant. Right from the open this was killer. Amazing nose of soy, umami, blood, leather, saddle, nuts, and more leather. On the palate lots of energy. 73 was not a great year in Piedmont but this is singing. Perfume leaps out of the glass. Held up well over a few hours drinking. This is exactly how I like my old Barolo. 94-95.

Brick red in the glass. Very clear. Needed an hour to open up. Typical Barolo nose with a hit of leather and tar. Wonderfully Long aftertaste. Spritely for a wine so old.

Still very ripe and fresh. I didn’t give this any air, but I think it could have benefited from a few hours.
