2012 Guerrieri Rizzardi 3 Cru Amarone della Valpolicella Classico was savoury, earthy and tea-like. The developing Amarone was clear and medium garnet in colour without any sediments. Freshly uncorked, there were aromas of fallen leaves, mushroom, preserved red cherries and a hint of Worcestershire sauce. It took two hours in-glass to open up notes of raisins and violets. The mouthfeel was off-dry and rather full-bodied, driven by high level of fresh acidity and medium level of chalky tannin. Oolong black tea and earth were the dominant flavours in the rather long savoury finish. It was comparatively elegant, savoury and less chocolatey than the typical Amarone, like Masi and Zenato, so drinkers expecting more plushness might be disappointed.
Guerrieri Rizzardi usually sells the Amarone as single vineyard bottlings. In the 2012 vintage, the vintage conditions were less favourable, and Rizzardi decided to blend the wines of the 3 Crus to achieve a balanced expression. The wine was aged for three years in oak, and about 50,000 bottles were produced in the 2012 vintage.

Evolved nicely in the bottle. Stewed plums, red berries, a hint of spice.

A nose of cherry and some spice, garnet in color. A medium to full bodied red, with black cherry, plum, raisin and spice on finish. www.winelx.com

This has come along nicely -- much better, more integrated, less hot than when it was younger.

Not the most complex Amarone out there, but tasted delicious. And for the price, outstanding!
