Tasted alongside the '98 Tofanelli, this was more red-fruited, with some dusty cranberry/pomegranate fruit, hints of orange peel and spice, on a medium- to full-bodied frame. Dark (but not saturated) purple color with little signs of age, this was still quite youthful, but with the rough edges of young zin smoothed out. A very tasty wine, although I did prefer the style of the Tofanelli

This still drinking well. Still a bit pricey and even sweet as one expects from Turley Zins. Just not really my favorite style. It is well made for the style, though probably too into the tertiary flavors for those who like this style.

More subdued and narrow nose of sweet red fruits—cherry and currants. The sweet is combined with some tartness on the palate – reminiscent of cooked cranberries, cherry, with some brown herb/wood notes. After a few hours, this is really smooth and drinking quite nicely. Not the power one gets with young Turleys, this has some laser-like cherry and tart currants, with some lovely acidity and a nice long finish. This is ready to drink now. I don’t think it will improve more, but who knows?

Look, we love Zin and are big fans of Turley, but if you are still holding on to a bottle of this, gift it or drink it. It has the intense fruit this wine is known for, you can still capture the pepper. It retains its body and you can catch a glimpse of its magic, but the truth is it hasn’t aged well. Or, it has drifted into the “echoes of a port” region. We tasted it because it was from our wedding year. But pass on this for something younger. As for my wife (who gets better with age), she would say “it tastes like a dried grape.”
