Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 14 notes)

Tasted by Apollo_Creed on 11/30/2009 & rated 91 points: I was slightly worried, but this ended up being really quite stellar. Still had great color, and you could smell it from across the table. Plums on the nose and on the tongue. (211 views)
Tasted by silvercup on 8/31/2009: Awesome. Still full of bright red fruit with some complexity added from the tobacco/ pine aromas. Tons of cherry, raspberry and red currant with tobacco, pine box, cedar, forest floor and plum aromas. Tasted cranberry, cherry, pine, and plum. Perfect to drink right now. Tannins still show, but they are very well integrated, and the finish lasts forever. (428 views)
Tasted by futronic on 6/5/2009 & rated 90 points: 5th Annual Italian Offline Pre-Game (Simple Bistro, Toronto, Canada): Medium-dark ruby colour. Aromas of iodine, leather, dried fruit. Medium-bodied with resolved tannins. Evolved wine showing dried fruit, leather, earth. Moderate finish, ~30s. (518 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 6/5/2009 & rated 92 points: WIML92. No formal notes. Decant for sediment. (503 views)
 Tasted by Jaco2112 on 4/11/2009 & rated 93 points: (463 views)
Tasted by LeechDogg on 3/28/2009 & rated 88 points: Not much fruit, veggie, slightly astringent tannins. Not as nice as the 82 Howell Mountain by any stretch. (587 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 1/5/2009 & rated 91 points: Nose of currants and leather. A little touch of VA added some complexity. Not enough to be distracting and ruin the wine. Tannins are pretty well integrated at this point and the acidity provides nice lift. This was a real nice bottle of aged cab, and was a great buy at $60. Excellent with a pan seared rib steak.  Tasted by Richard Jennings on 9/18/2008 & rated 94 points: Dunn Cabernet Vertical '82 - '86 Blindtasted (Palo Alto, California): Group's #2 (my #1) – 36 pts; 3 1st place votes, 3 2nd place votes, 0 thirds, 0 last places – Medium red violet color with pale meniscus; lovely cassis, currant nose with a hint of mint; tangy, tart cassis, tart berry palate with lively acidity and sparkle; medium-plus finish (637 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 2/16/2008: Pure balsamic nose. More tolerable palate, but clearly over-the-hill and not at all enjoyable. (867 views)
Tasted by ptheimer on 12/31/2007 & rated 88 points: Drank this one just past its prime, still some nice fruit but not what I expected from a 24 year old established cab. (942 views)
Tasted by PaulH on 12/5/2007 & rated 89 points: Celebrating Repeal Day with Twelve California Wines (1968-2005) (Acme Chophouse, San Francisco, CA): Deep red color, not the kind of wine you can see through. Nose shows bitter chocolate and noticeable acid. Palate has a medium-plus body with tannins and acid predominating, but for a Dunn, this is almost drinkable. Of course, it's not a Howell Mountain, so after 22 years we can always hope it will be approachable. Well made, but as with most Dunn's in a very backwards style. I thought this was too tannic and acidic to be any fun, but most of the other folks at the table seemed to enjoy it. Impressive, but not a lot of fun. (1318 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 12/5/2007 & rated 94 points: Repeal of Prohibition Day Celebration with Cali Cabs (Acme Chop House, San Francisco, California): Dark red violet color; austere cassis, mint and tart plum nose; wow, a ready-to-drink Dunn, solid, cassis, plum palate with sweet, firm tannins; medium-plus finish (tasting younger than the '97 Peter Michael "Les Pavots") (548 views)
Tasted by zazim on 4/29/2006 & rated 88 points: Medium garnet, red-brown rim. The nose isn't altogether bad, with leathery components and hints of mushroom, but it is marred by a candied element that I associate the over-the-hill California cabs. On the palate there is still a fair amount of fruit braced by muted tannins. The wine has a slightly astringent finish. I think that this wine has seen better days. Stored since release at 55 degrees.

This is consistent with another '84 Dunn Napa tried earlier this week. The '84 Howell Mountain (92+) is much better than the Napa and doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast. I am going to save my HM's and drink my Napa's forthwith. (1851 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 1/28/2006 flawed bottle: CORKED! (2121 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
