At peak and/or beginning the downhill slide. Poured a glass out and then slow-oxed the bottle for 2 hours prior to restaurant, then drank over 2-3 hours. Better/best toward end of that window. Raisins, mint, blackberry bramble, earth, fruit leather, gingerbread. We brought it intending to eat it with all manner of pork; it's way bigger than that, at this point -- highly tannic, would go great with a peppered steak.
Another outstanding bottle. It appears that slow-ox is the key (5 hours on this bottle). Fully mature, expresive and complex. Mint, tart cherry and earthy brambly fruit. Full, yet elegant and resolved on the palette. Chewy tannins and grip on the chery and spice ladended finish that seems to go on for a minute and a half. I wish I had more of this...this bottle had another few years (at least). 9-18-9-8
Completely at its' peak though the Sotheby's Encyclopedia says up to 20 years. Wonderfully mellowed...iron notes, deep earthy tones, dark fruits, supple and soft mouth feel. Beautiful Amber edging. It's a Nebbiolo varietal but reminds me of a Syrah. This one deserves some air...it's a '98 vintage for cryin out loud. After an hour or so I just started getting an anise/licorice burst. A decent glass left for night two had a good cab "leather" thing and was even more mellow. Thanks to my Son for this one.
