I was curious how Gaja ages compared to old Giacosa or Conterno. This is one of my older bottles of San Lorenzo so I decided to investigate with an old friend. On opening it had a very pretty nose with a solid cherry core palate. This wine peaked at about two hours after we opened it and then slowly faded. I wouldn't have guessed it was 45 years old. Some leather but not nearly as much leather/tar/cigar as Giacosa or Conterno wines from 71 and 78. It was as if the masculine Gaja wines of the 90's had evolved into a more feminine elegant version. Still wonderful in its own right.

Cloudy and aged in appearance. Garnet with tawny edges. Lots of leather. Tannins beautifully integrated. Drinking incredibly well for its age. Shared by ST at Dewakan.

Monfortino 1971 Dinner: Sesame, earth, licorice, roses, spice and licorice - smashingly good aromas here. Palate is at a perfect point for me, the structure is still present but it is mostly resolved and the balance and length are fantastic. A joyous wine to drink.

Good but definitely couldn’t last much longer. Was a bit worried when opened but starting to come into its own.
