  • WSET Level 4, Unit D5: Fortified Wines Part I - Port, Madeira and VDN (Weinakademie Österreich, Rust, Austria): Wine 9: The wine has a deep ruby colour. The nose is of medium(-) intensity and shows primary characteristics of red fruit (e.g., red cherry), black fruit (e.g., plum), and light herbaceous notes, as well as secondary characteristics like cream. It also has a kirsch aspect to it.

On the palate the wine is medium sweet, with medium acidity, medium tannin, medium alcohol, and medium(+) body. The tannin seems coarse at first but rounds out as the wine breathes in the glass. The flavour intensity is medium, flavours include primary characteristics of red fruit (e.g., cherry), and black fruit (e.g., plum), as well as secondary characteristics (e.g., butter, cream). The length is medium.

This wine is of good quality since it has medium complexity, medium intensity, and medium length. To be considered being of very good quality it would require greater complexity and length. The wine is ready to drink and while it will keep up for a number of years, it is not expected to improve, and in that sense is not suitable for further aging in bottle.

  • Over a year later, I'm finding much less acidity on opening, and this is very approachable. It's basically a sort of light ruby port without the alcohol heat or the chewiness. Very easy drinking with cheese or desserts and doesn't feel like it's going to give you a nasty head in the morning, even if you drink a half bottle.

  • P3h. As always a threat in combination with chocolate mousse

  • The whole area of Maury / Rivesaltes is new to me for sweet wines. I'm looking for alternatives to port, particularly for drinking with cheese.

This halfie is working well for me. It doesn't quite have the weight and complexity of a vintage port, but it's a pretty nice balance of sweetness, fruit, and (perhaps a touch much) acidity for about a third of the price.

Apparently the acidity mellows a little after the bottle has been open for a while, but, particularly with halfies, that's not very likely to happen for me! :-)

EDIT: 3 days later the acidity on what's left has indeed mellowed to the extent of basically disappearing. It's now a smooth, sweet (but not cloyingly so) wine. But for me not enough bite now! Maybe it was ideal a day after opening? :-)

  • Au Manoir Hovey
Un vin rond, chocolaté, plutôt simple, mais tellement savoureux. C'est frais, avec même un peu de finesse dans cette finale harmonieuse, un peu courte. Aucune sensation de chaleur. Délicieux. 90 pts
