Elyssa's 100 day celebration (Table at 7): From magnum. Popped and poured. Drank over 2.5 hours. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose initial mustiness which blew off, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries, red plums, earth, Bordeaux-like graphite, slight licorice and vanilla. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, red and black plums, earth, graphite, slight licorice and vanilla. Medium+ finish. Brighter and comparatively fresher character, but not as much depth and richness as the superb 1994. Very good quality nonetheless. Drink up. Unlikely to improve much further with age. 100% Tempranillo. Combination of French and American oak barrels.
Paired with duck @ Edo's Squid (Richmond VA). Love the way the earthiness of this wine went with the duck, plenty of red fruits, spice and hints of graphite on the finish. Very smooth, yet rich and concentrated. Drink or hold!
