A magnificent Mas de Daumas Gassac vertical from the private cellars of Allard Jakobs (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Magnum. For me the greatest vintage of Gassac ever, and this bottle convincingly confirms this impression. Perfectly developed but still with potential, still so fresh, spices and fruit and flowers, subtle terroir expression, mild but firm tannins, powerful but with almost Burgundian elegance, there is real beauty here, everything is in the right place. A wine that makes you go silent. Not quite as magical as the bottle in 2021 but clearly of the highest order.

Pristine bottle, level 1.5cm below the perfect cork, purchased in 1991 and kept in my own 12C cellar ever since. Decanted for 30 minutes. I remain convinced that the 1988 is Aimé Guibert's masterpiece. This blend of 70% Cabernet-Sauvignon and 30% Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Tannat has everything. At this stage it is a putative blend of Château Latour and Château Haut-Brion, with a drop of Rousseau Chambertin. Yes, it is that good, with a remarkable freshness, exemplary balance (12.7% ABV), and a beguiling elegance, fragrance and warmth. Effortless brilliance. A perfect bottle, at perfect peak. We were blessed today. One bottle left, but I will be looking out for a perfectly kept magnum - they bottled 1,200 of them. Or maybe one of the 36 jeroboams or 12 Mathusalems...
A superb bottle drunk alongside the 1989 which this just edged.. Still deep red, profound nose with fruit and garrigue, great depth and intensity. Fruit followed through on palate with intense minerality and earth in mid palate. A long fresh lifted finish. Really delicious.

(Mas de Daumas Gassac) Group's #3 (my #1) – 41 pts.; 4, 1, 0, 1 – dark red violet color with clear meniscus; elegant porcini, rich beef jus nose; tasty, mature, like an elegant Graves with 20 years bottle age, focused tart meat and red fruit palate; medium-plus finish
