NobleRottersSydney - 2005 Oz reds (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {cork, 16%} [Geoffrey] The wines got more extreme as the night wore on; this smells as much port as table wine. Blackberry essence with hot dragon’s breath of alcohol. There are raisins and prunes on the palate amongst the rest; this is what I imagine embalming fluid tastes like. The palate is full-bodied yet hollow at the same time, with some acidity, or at least ethanol, medium length finish, all heat. Something of a freak-show; probably earned a bunch of Parker points. Would have been better on release I reckon.

Yes it's powerful, yes it's high in alcohol, but it has a wonderful complexity and depth and went wonderfully with our vegetarian okra stew. I would recommend drinking it with any full-flavored food, because frankly, the food might just take second place behind the wine :-). We have a few more bottles in the cellar and I would say the drinking window should indeed go way beyond 2019.

15+ minutes open in the bottle, but could use more and has some years left in it. Very similar to the Torbreck Shiraz “The Factor” I had a little bit ago. Almost black in color. Nose has big cedar and tar aromas. Wine probably has a little too much oak, but love the dark fruit and vegetable/earth undertones and it is very jammy. The 16% OH has to be a typo, because I’ve never seen a wine that high and it doesn’t seem that high. Insanely long finish. Massive power, but not quite on par with “The Factor”.

Dark Blueberry and Blackberry fruit. Vanilla and tobacco notes. Excellent!
