  • Had this after a run of sensational wines, so by the time we got there our judgment was shot. But, still, another hugely enjoyable Ribera Crianza. I love Crianza from a great vintage - all the quality of Reserva and Gran R, but with less emphasis on oak. Often just as ageworthy, as this little beauty heartily proves. Lots and lots of supple, juicy, jammy fruit. Secondary flavours of liquorice and molasses, eucalyptus-like vitality, beautiful structure... A super wine. So good. Another decade of fun to go.

  • Dark cherry, some cloudiness on the rim and rich orange colour. Delicious soaring nose of treacle tart, strawberry and mince pie (cloves, cinnamon). Still quite astringent - superb acidity, very spicy and chewy, vibrant. Never take a Crianza less seriously than a Reserva or a Gran Reserva if they're made by a good winemaker in a great vintage. This has at least 20 years left in it. Very good - impressive.

  • Classy and classic spanish red. Soft red fruit, asian spices, a little oak vanilla. Mature and ready to drink right now.

  • Deep plum/wild fruits and cigar box; hint of mint on the nose. Smooth, soft and silky; well balanced (no over extraction or over oak here) and tannins softened yet bold and lingers on the palate. Alcohol soft and certainly tastes less than 14%. This is opulent Ribero del Duero and drinking superb now. More rounded and balanced than last time I had it in 2007. These 2004s are drinking so well and are text book Ribero del Duero; I'm tempted to say why can't all years be like this but what would be the fun in that. Seek out and buy without hesitation: finding 2004s however is getting increasingly difficult. If you are ever passing through Madrid Barajas airport the Vina Pedrosa Crianza is always in the duty free at a reasonable price. No doubt the 2004s are long gone, more's the pity and I'm kicking myself I only bought 4 of them.
