  • This bottle showing very well and a testimony to the high quality and longevity of Lafarge Volnay village. Color, fruit and power above expectations

  • Pale garnet with significant browning edges. Aromas of wild forest flowers, stewed redcurrants, dirty soil earthiness and tree bark. Tannins still quite a big bite and acidic as well, with bright yet stewy redcurrents, green fern and moss, twigs, dirty moss and undergrowth, and a hint of caramel and cocoa, as well as dark red flowers that extends to the back palate to a long complex finish. Might have developed quite a bit but still, solid juice!

  • Drunk for lunch of wild duck with blood orange sauce. Bright ruby with bricking edge. Nose of faded red stone fruits. The palate showed fallen plums and cherries trodden under foot. Some tannins persist which without strong fruit put it a little out of balance. The fruit has begun to fade and earthiness is now the more dominant flavour. Moderate length and still very pleasant to drink but no longer at its best - its vigour has gone!

  • Red fruits, moss, subtle florals, and earth on the nose.
Mid- plus weighted and sinewy for pinot to start. It's structured and deep with classical lines bordering on stern, but I like it. Sappy, with latent power that has excellent balance. Some forest berry notes, red licorice. Savory ferrous notes. A stony, tilled earth like firmness on the back end. Focused and precise. Lingering savory stoniness. This is no charmer, but is it beautiful classically proportioned wine, that I wished more wine emulated. Firm and chiseled for Volnay. This still has time to develop into more, but I won't likely find out, as it was my last bottle. Excellent acidity and balanced structure. Very long for a village wine. The last glass was the best glass. Of note, this took several hours to open up fully, so I suspect based on the combination of producer and vintage, that reports of this wine's demise are inaccurate and that it was just tight. 90

Burgundy-Report

(Lafarge Michel Volnay) Medium young ruby core with a cherry rim. High-toned soaring nose of ripe cherry/cranberry and a hint of redcurrant - really super. The palate is very fresh - the acidity is certainly to the fore - but with a silky texture and density that seems to be just about enough to come round with time vs the structure. I'm a lover of the fresh, slightly acidic style but still found this bottle a bit of a challenge. I suspect that it will come round and if that's the case it should be a wonderful villages given the super aromatics - leave it another 3-5 years before revisiting. If you want a surer bet though, you could always try the next wine...
