  • This Tuscan Rosso is from a vintage where persistent rain in July and August in a wide band across France and Italy caused considerable rot in the grape clusters, which at its worst can give the wines made a dirty dishwater taste, and at its best reduces the harvest of usable grapes. Nonetheless, Domain Soumade in Rasteau managed to make top Grenache wines in 2002 that proved in side by side tastings to be superior in quality to vintages before and after 2002. So, how was this 2002 wine when we put it into a blind tasting for 12 skilled wine lovers? Almost totally contrary to the reputation of the vintage, the wine was tasty, refreshing, and enjoyably drinkable with good color, decent concentration, well structured by acidity and tannin, zero moldy flavors and no problem with under ripeness, that got only better after being opened and made the list of the best wines in the tasting.

  • Note to anyone looking at the current WTSO offering of this wine - the 2002 vintage was a washout for Italy. Vintage rated in the 70's by WS. Many producers did not even release wines. So WTSO's "deal" on this wine for $14.99 may not be worth it.
