Very pleasantly surprised. Cellar tracker gave this a drinking window through 2011. Wine Spectator's window was through 2008. Plus the last Cellartracker tasting note was from 8/2010. Opened this at a "lost in the cellar" dinner and it showed very well. Definitely not over the hill. Over the course of the evening, it opened up and really showed off lots of complex flavors. It was delicate (at this age) and had more acidity than fruit.
It's taken awhile but this is finally starting to come around. Deeply colored for its age--no bricking. Gorgeous spicy nose with cinnamon, red berries and touch of iron. Savory flavors are still quite bright but the texture is smoothing out and the acid is coming into balance. If you have any I would wait until 2012 to 2018. Note: I had a bottle of this a few years ago with John d'Anna of Cristom. It was infanticide. He said "that's Freedom Hill for you" indicating that it was this site rather than the vintage or wine making that made for such slow development.
