Broadbent in 1997: lean, twisted, ...nose and flavor better than expected ... ; in 2000: some sweetness, a dash of fruit, tolerable acidity ... 2* - myself in 2013: miracle of softness and complexity; not the best, but a charming bottle of a neglected year.
Colour is very light garnet with tawny on the rim. Nose lacks concentration but has typical Margaux aromas, like cedar, coffee, tar and leather together with ripe plummy fruit and sweet spice like cinammon. Yet ... the volume is turned down... In the mouth it is very weak almost watery, lacks depth of flavour and is almost watery. The wine is not dead, not even tired, it is just very lean and lacking in concentration but I believe it was always like that. Looks like it was never great though it has impressive keeping qualities. Tannins are melted, acidity is quite high but finish is short. Definitely a mature Bordeaux wine but very weak.
