I didn't expect this wine ageing so well. Nose with blackberry and leather. Still fruity on the palate with some sharpness. Nice wine after ageing 18 years.

Very light color, aromas of red fruits, unripe olives, flowers...plenty of tertiary aromas (dried mushrooms)... on the palate still firmly acidic, good flesh in the middle, completely integrated tannins. Balanced wine, very good length, great intensity and complexity. Plenty of finesse, the high acidity at the front and resolved tannins at the back make the wine texturally a bit off, great expression of place. Past its prime a bit again for this bottle IMO, but still as good as St Joseph can be at this stage in its evolution...

Saturday Night at Ian's (Ian's House): Paired this with braised veal in a mushroom broth with wilted spinach and mushrooms. The nose was a bit reductive to me at first, but with some air that blew away...and morphed into a lovely example of what St. Joseph's can be. Lithe tones of red fruit and florals blended with subtle tobacco and earthen tones. The palate was complex and blended layers of potpourri, mushrooms, subtle meatiness, and sour cherries. This was a great pairing with the veal stew.

Intensely gamey at first, then some deep animal fat and olive flavors, with a background of dark red, woodsy fruit. It seemed to waver between supple and harsh (in structure), but there was always lots of red fruit and meat juice. Enjoyable to observe and drink, but not as exciting as I hoped.

Built for the long haul with unresolved tannins - muted nose but very expressive on the palate with rose petals, red fruits and vanilla
Very pleasant and surprisingly young
