(Tasted at the Turley Pickup Party) Poured from magnum. A tad past its glory years with a bit of browning at the rim, but still delicious. Much of the fruit has receded, replaced by intriguing secondary notes. A bouquet of cranberries and light cigar notes, followed by hints of cranberries, currants and more smokey notes. Features a more lengthy finish than expected, with some campfire and very light menthol notes. The experience reminded us of nighttime in Yosemite Valley, campfires in the distance.
Excellent. Balanced, even with 15.3% alcohol (which was not noticeable in any way) and great structure. Tannins are resolved. Nose was very savoury, almost with something cheese-like plus stewed fruit, herbs, and more. Palate was similar. Great bottle. I have no idea how it will evolve.
med red; sweet red raspberry and etoh nose; red fruit w/ tart acidity and an alcoholic spine on the palate; serviceable for pizza, etc.; not dead but no need to hold this or any zin for that matter for 10+ yrs.
