Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 22 notes)

Tasted by Anonymous on 1/10/2010 & rated 92 points: 2004 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia Sassicaia (Italië, Toscane, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia) Kleur: Diep donkerrood Aroma / bouquet: Halfgesloten.
Tasted by EyeDoc on 12/7/2009 & rated 92 points: good up front fruit - finish is a tad short - well made wine (1206 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 10/22/2009 & rated 91 points: 2009 Wine Spectator NYWE Grand Tasting (Marriott Marquis, Times Square, NYC): i tasted this late, but didn't love it. some heat on the palate. leathery. (1594 views)
Tasted by J-Sho on 9/30/2009 & rated 94 points: Excuse me for the vagueness here since this was drunk last week. However, it was a wonderful wine with deep complexity, a well structured but velvety palate, and a long beautiful finish. Great now but probably deserves a bit more bottle time. (1872 views)
Tasted by Gee on 6/16/2009 & rated 93 points: Cipriani (2456 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 5/10/2009: A bit of unfair treatment here as it was popped and poured. But we did keep it around in our glasses for a few hours. At first the aromatics were primarily earthy and a bit muted. On the palate this is showing lots of fruit and acid. Big ripe fruit but not heavy in any way. Firm tannins on the finish but they are masked by the fruit. Should be a sensational wine with the parts come together. (2720 views)
Tasted by igaf on 3/3/2009: Tasted blind. Dark ruby. Nose: the most closed of all at the tasting. The class is there, though you can barely feel it. A hint of dark berries and sandalwood, shy and quiet, but very pure. Medium+ body. Contrasting with the nose it is extraordinary fruity on the palate, but managing to keep elegance and balance. Good tannins. Very long, sligthly tannic, fruity aftertaste with herbal notes. (3435 views)
Tasted by lhickey on 10/1/2008 & rated 95 points: Tasted alongside Solaia, Ornellaia, guado el tasso, Solengo, and Oreno. Definitely the standout. More bordeaux in style than the others with elegance, balance and structure. will age well. Collectable. (3877 views)
Tasted by albertomassa on 9/30/2008 & rated 90 points: (2715 views)
Tasted by CarTer on 9/6/2008 & rated 92 points: Aormas de frutas muito maduras, taninos ainda muito pronunciados, mas espectaular. Persistente. Novo. Maravilhoso. (4028 views)
Tasted by CAS on 8/3/2008 & rated 93 points: (2779 views)
Tasted by Roughl on 4/26/2008 & rated 93 points: A very nice Sass. Liked it a lot. Very Balanced, bordeaux like, but with a hint of Italy. This wine is already very good now. Drank side by side the Tua Rita Redigaffi 2004, and Sass. was clearly more approachable now. (4568 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 3/4/2008 & rated 91 points: Rich black fruit, boysenberry and berry nose; very tight, tart berry and boysenberry palate; medium-plus finish 91+ pts. (3032 views)
Tasted by GPujia on 2/20/2008 & rated 94 points: Had at Restaurant and thought it was excellent. Even balance of tannins w/ some fruity notes, but not too fruity. Had a nice blend of fruit/dryness to it. Very smooth, nice finish. A great Super Tuscan. (5110 views)
Tasted by Lorenzo on 12/31/2007 & rated 92 points: (3653 views)
Tasted by Barbara B on 12/9/2007 & rated 92 points: Gualdo del Re wines in blind pairs (Palazzo di Doug e Jeanette): Pretty shade of ruby; dense. Ample nose of fruit, earth and subtle oak; developed some mineral and balsamic notes over time. Sweet sensation from big fruitiness, with vanilla and earthiness; creamy texture, smooth tannins, rich, full bodied. Great wine. Did not pick it as the Sassicaia, even though I had had this the night before (*sigh*); the Gualdo del Re wines were too good and threw me off. (5792 views)
Tasted by Barbara B on 12/8/2007 & rated 94 points: Nice ruby colour, dense, matte. Big fruit nose with earthy undertones. Palate of fruit and clean earthy character, umami/savoury, some cloves and balsamic notes as it evolved in the glass over an hour or more; medium high acidity, medium level of smooth tannins (lovely); moderate alcohol (label=13.5%). Perfectly balanced, long, complex, pleasing in every way. Great now. Note to self: keep some to check development over next few years. (5615 views)
Tasted by schway on 11/5/2007 & rated 93 points: A classy, lovely wine. Wonderful ripe fruit -- currant, blackberries, a little plum. Notes of sweet chocolate and hints of smoke and spice (cinnamon? nutmeg?). Just a tad of earthiness on the nose, which vanishes fast. (Wish there was more!) Wood is present, but subtle and well-integrated. Soft and silky on the palate, but with great body and structure. Fine, velvety tannins. Finish is long and very refined. Impeccable balance. After only a 20 minute decant, it seemed to be drinking just fine. Continued to improve over the next hour, but seemed to decline a bit after that, losing some power and structure. Only complaint is that I did not find it particularly interesting, or complex. This is my first experience with a "legendary" super-tuscan. I love the style, approach and craftsmanship. And the fruit is really singing. Can't say I'd pay $150 for it, but certainly glad I had this opportunity to try it. (6048 views)
Tasted by noppakit s. on 9/6/2007 & rated 86 points: This bottle was tasted in Zurich. ( reminds me the weak vintage 1980 ) Greeny, less fruit, medium-bodied, nice acid, balance and nice aftertaste.....Good Table Wine : ( (6391 views)
Tasted by dedris on 8/24/2007 & rated 96 points: Opened a bottle at the tenuta's osteria in Bolgheri. Little time to decant, but it was great. Notes of ripe currants, berry, cassis, spice, and chocolate. Great texture and silk and velvety liquid, Good structured, fruity and superby balanced on the palate. Can't get tired of this wine. Good and smooth finish. Probably will keep and improve for 10+ years (6217 views)
Tasted by Hank Gillespie on 6/1/2007: The Wine Summit 2007: Tenuta San Guido - Sassicaia - June 1, 2007 - 10:45 A.M. (The Post Hotel - Lake Louise, AB): Spends 2 years in barrel and 6 months in bottle prior to release; Dark ruby; smoky black fruits – black currant and dark cherry – an expression of bell pepper coming through – short sniffs produced a light truffle smell; definitive black currant flavours – good structure with fine acidity and muted tannins; smooth and rich on the palate – attractive length – fruit lingering in the finish. (6359 views)
Tasted by TDV on 3/22/2007 & rated 92 points: Armit Italian tasting (Lansdowne Club): Slightly green/vegetal nose on top of the fruit. Smooth, rich, good concentration. Long finish. This is clearly a very nice wine, but i'm not really sure what the fuss is about. (6891 views)

About red wine
The variety Red Bordeaux Blend on CellarTracker implies any blend using any or all of the five traditional Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. As such, this is used worldwide, whether for wines from Bordeaux, Meritages from California and Canada, some Super-Tuscan wines etc.
In 1994, Sassicaia was granted a unique distinction of having the only DOC dedicated to a single wine (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC). So there are two distinct, non-overlapping definitions for Sassicaia in CellarTracker:
