  • Brick rim, good legs. First whiff made me call out "Simba.....he's alive!" I feared the wine would have been long over the hill. Instead I smell fruit. Cassis the dominant flavor, finish long and ends with some obvious tannin. Improved over two hours. Tried a small bit the next morning, fruit and tannin both gone. Still not unpleasant, however. Probably would have been best to drink earlier, but a first-rate bottle of old Sonoma cabernet.

  • Lightly spicy nose develops well over the course of about an hour and a half; not complex, but very nice. Color excellent -- clean, clear ruby with some bricking. Palate initially reticent, with evident tannins which drift away quickly to reveal a somewhat austere though fairly pleasant wine. Fruit has certainly faded, but this has held together very well -- no oxidation despite the crumbly cork. For a fleeting moment I noticed some soy elements on the nose, and a slight green quality on the palate -- yet still enjoyable. Elegant and reserved, likely better five years ago. Nice, if not exceptional.

  • RED BROWN ON THE EDGE. CHOCOLATE, BLACKBERRIES, GREEN PEPPER, AND HERBALNESS IN THE NOSE. LICORICE, PLUMS AND BLACK CHERRIES IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.

  • Amis du Vin tasting of 1985 Cabernets. Sponsored by the Wine House. Good, but not one of the top wines.
