Remarkably young for a 16 year old wine. This was put up against other aged northern rhones from flagship producers (hermitage and cote rotie) and this was by far the youngest expression. Hardly any tertiary elements were showing, though this did not impact how pleasurable the wine is today. I'd recommend holding probably another 10 years to see the full potential of this wine.
Dark red color. Slow to develop nose: olives, camphor, tar, cherry-raspberry, garrigue. On arrival, medium tannin and medium acidity; very structured. Rather primary in the mouth: red fruits, olives, a retsina-like bitterness of pine and garrigue. Very intense, somewhat tiring to drink, and not an easy wine to enjoy right now. Bottle #5 of twelve.
Olive, balsam, herbs, leather and hints of smoke with dark black cherry fruit. Palate is lush and seamless. Shows the ripeness of the '99 vintage without in any way being heavy. Deceptively well-structured. Very nice now and likely even better with more time. 93+
