  • Showing quite nicely today with the floral edge to the black cherry, tobacco, earth and spicy profile. Soft, almost silky, medium bodied and refined, the wine avoids the curse of under ripeness and cool weather flavors that mar many wines from the vintage. The wine was made from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

  • Opened last night at a Bordeaux tasting. This was delicious, the winner of the evening.
On the nose, bright red cherry fruit intermixed with tobacco, leather, wet soil, and notes of plums in the upper register.
The palate reveals a wine that is still bright and alive, med in body, with black cherry fruit interlaced with flavors of mocha, mushroom, leather, and some light green pepper notes to keep it interesting. Beautifully balanced med/med+ acidity, very nice gritty tannins that give great structure and mouthfeel.
This wine is drinking quite well right now, and although it has likely reached it's maturity and won't likely further improve, I feel it will drink at this apogee through 2024, based on the structure of tannins and acidity. Very nice.

  • Monthly Tuesday group #006: Bordeaux 2001 versus 2002 (By VD): The bouquet is not as refined as the 2001, but still beautiful with dark berries and vanilla. On the palate dark forest fruits as well, some graphite, a touch of sweetness and also some green bell pepper. Some chocolate and sweet licorice. Good acidity tannin and bitterness. Will probably never be really exquisite, but it can age for some more years and offers really nice drinking from now. 89 – 90

(Chateau Giscours Margaux) Another dark and glossy wine, with not a hint of maturity looking at the colour, although the nose presents an appealing array of aromas suggesting nice development. Quite classic, bloody, meaty, iron-edged style, with a full, ripe, creamy character on the palate. Lovely structure, aromatic and floral character with a gravelly edge. Good acidic freshness. This has excellent potential. I prefer it to the 2004.
