Early Birthday Celebration (Chicago): Opened 45 minutes before trying and then decanted and drank over the next 3 hours. Great aromatics and palate from the start, but only got better over the course of the evening. Dried dark red cherry and berry, savory herbs, lots of black pepper and notes of iron. The same dried fruit and herb flavors on the palate with a great blood/iron streak running through it. Fairly powerful and the tannins have integrated nicely. The acid stuck out a touch on the finish at first but with time in the decanter everything balanced out nicely.
Cork was saturated and tricky to extract. No surprise there this being a 30 yr old wine. On P&P the nose was definitely not showing much. Palate showed predominately earth, with some licorice and a hint of cherry but the tannins and acidity, still very much in play, screamed decant me! 4 hours of Slow-O later, not much had changed, if anything I'm now getting less than before! I decided to roll the dice and put the remainder into a 375ml bottle which I corked and left in the fridge overnight. 24 hours later this has become stellar stuff! Balsamic, forest floor, mushrooms, iron & blood on the nose & palate. Years of life left in this beauty so if you can find one that’s been properly stored, this will deliver the goods. Knowing what I know now I would have been much better off if I'd popped the cork @ 7am instead of 4pm.
Outstanding wine. Cork soaked. Wine initially had dirty nose, but was left to decant for 4 hours. Complex and breath-taking palate of lifted fruits, with some cinnamon and gamey undertones. Exceptional "La-La" from a vintage not highly renowned. Superior to the 1990 La Landonne we recently drank.
