Undergrowth, balsamic, and a smoky woodyness, almost like the morning after a bonfire. Also cocoa powder, (not chocolate). Transfers brilliantly to the palette with added sour black cherry. The heady black cherry joined in on the nose on the second glass. Such richness, complexity, and concentration, surely an eternal wine.

Stood up for two months. Ullage of 3cm. Cork in absolutely pristine condition. Decanted for four hours. A medium garnet core fading to a pale garnet outer edge. The aromatic equivalent of black cherries reduced in aged balsamic vinegar and seasoned with sweet baking spices. You’ll also find the classically reassuring scents of melted tar and dried red roses with the addition of wood smoke leaving you in no doubt as to where in the world you are. Structurally this is a delight - there’s a weightless, silken quality with the intensity coming from a deep, rich core of black cherry giving the wine a wonderful heady characteristic perfectly carpeted by more aged notes of cold, charred embers and black truffle. An outstanding mature Barolo.

Generally I do find that old barolo needs some air to open up. I poured this early and figured I'd go back later and of course it was all gone by that point. The base was there but it was more balsamic style and high acid and hadn't had time to unfurl completely when I was drinking it. Suspect it got a lot better though with some more time.

very nice aged Barolo with some heft in the body, good acidity for balance... again very good but didn't turn heads... red fruited and bright... fair QOR at $110
