Weekly tasting group #132; Mas de Daumas red 9 vintages plus some extra's. (@ DJ): The bouquet is not really expressive, but there are some red and dark berry fruit impressions as well as some vegetal notes. On the palate red and dark berry fruits as well, spiciness, clove, licorice, some chocolate a lot of acidity and drying tannin with still a firm bite. Some tasters thought this was an early 2000 wine. Amazing that a wine of this age can still have so much fresh acidity and tannin. At this moment I don’t think the wine will improve anymore, but the acidity and tannin structure are special and it wouldn’t surprise me this bottle is still drinkable in 2020 and maybe even a bit better than today. Today’s score was 88.
Bought from auction. Was well stored, but was begining to soak through the cork. I was worried, but, but the wine had a ruby plum color with almost no bricking. some cloudiness more due to the fact that i decanted without a light and poured too far into the bottle. the nose was a bit dumb, a bit of spice, some red fruit, an old cracked leather. The mouth was still very much alive, plenty of soft fruit, tobacco, cedar, altough much lighter weight than younger vintages of this wine I've had. The color would mislead one on the texture and mouthfeel, which is medium at best. There was nothing exceptional or powerful about this wine, except it's staying power at 30 years. A good dinner claret at a fraction af aged bordeaux's price.
Yes, this is very Bordeaux-like. Earth, wood and a bit of dust--yum! This Languedoc is drinking great, particularly for a 28 year old. Probably not going to get any better but should cellar well through 2010.
