BYOK: Dinner with Olivier (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): I'm not always a big Burgundy fan but at the end of a night with a lot of bubbles it actually was kindof nice to get a light red to finish off. This was I think quite reasonable for a burg and it was a hint of spicy and drinking pretty well.

BYOK! (Ai Fiori): Ordered from the list at the end of the night, because who can resist old Mortet? Light but very elegant expression of Gevrey. Olivier claims it is not his favorite pinot noir but I think he enjoyed it :) 93

1996 red burgundies (Tunstall): (Coravin) Darker red than the other 1996s this evening. Plusher nose of strawberry and oak. Medium bodied, complex, delicious, very good indeed. 93+, shading the Poissenot.

Now drinking properly, with acid at reasonable levels, tannins mostly resolved (but still some grip) and fruit still fine. Good wine, especially with food, but not exceptional, especially for top producer in a good year - insufficient length to really impress. My old notes suggest that I liked it when very young (in 2004), but found it too acidic in 2006.

Very nice, especially with food, but drink up as the fruit and depth is fading.
