| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 7 notes) | | | Tasted by GlennK on 10/31/2009 & rated 95 points: Off the list of the The River Cafe, London. Decanted for sediment and served. A really expressive and seductive nose of juicy ripe plums and chocolate. The palate feels fresh and packed with fruit that just glide along to a full and long finish. Balanced and elegant, this wine is really impressive. The somm said this was the best showing from a very mixed couple of cases in their inventory for whatever that is worth. Still very tannic, this needs fatty meat at the moment. Very tight, sour cherry really competes with the tannin right now. Potential, but will take another five years I think. Nose was rather lovely, and clearly Merlot - plums, spice, earthy soil and bramble. Palate was much bigger than expected though, almost hulking in its puckering, chewy tannins wed to rich plums, prunes and smoky notes. So much richness that it was almost overwhelming. It got a bit cleaner and more focused from the mid-palate and into the medium-lengthed finish, which had lots of concentrated fruit and mouthcoating tannins. Balance is there, fruit is there, structure is there, so I think this wine will do well in time - but it does need a whole lot of time though. It doesn't extend out from the mid palate but kind-of curls round after it - I guess because of the still mostly unresolved tannin(?) Pleasant but still requires several more years to tame those tannins! (415 views) | | | Tasted by Jozefs on 4/8/2007 & rated 91 points: Balanced but still very tight, in a closed phase. The black fruit is totally suppressed by the acidity and tannins and only just beginning to shine through. Needs additional time, probably at least 2 years. I had decanted this wine 24 hours in advance to get rid of some of the baby fat. Dark purple in the glass. Upon dropping my nose into the glass I thought; "oh no". I have had this wine 3 times before directly from the bottle and it has been stunning. Tonight it was somewhat indifferent. Dark berries and jam on the nose. No clear detail. However, this is a wine of immense density of fruit. It is not 100% Las Vegas, but tries to be a terroir wine. One gets the impression that this wine wants to be Lafleur! Well, it is a very nice wine, and whether it develops into a sumptuous drink with nice complexity and secondary aromas and dimensions is doubtful. However, straight from the bottle it is great. Never tried a Petrus, so I don't know if that holds water. But my God what a wine! Very dark purple, nearly black colour. Unbelievably intense bouquet of chocolate truffle, leather, licorice, dark berries..you name it. Such an impressive flow through the mouth, across the palate, endlessly evolving and showing new, complex textures. A wine built into a massive frame-work. Just a huge structure packed with dense, ripe fruit, and an integration that has to be experienced. WOW. Tannins are ripe and abundant, suggesting a wine with a long life ahead of it. I remember a post by Wing Commander reviewing the 1997 Guado Al Tasso and saying that he has 20 cases (240 bottles) of that wine. If I were to have 240 bottles of any wine, this would be it. Unfortunately that will never the case, since that would constitute 10 pct of the entire production of this wine (200 cases produced annually). The 1999 is said to be even better. How that is even possible, I don't know. If I were to award points we be somewhere in the mid to upper nineties. Seriously. The is GREAT stuff! (1486 views) |

The estate "Fattoria Petrolo", with its famous winery and prestigious production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The property covers 272 hectares (approximately 672 acres) with 31 hectares (over 76 acres) of specialized vineyards, 19 hectares (about 47 acres) of olive trees, and the rest natural plants and forest located at an altitude between 250 to 400 mt (750 to 1200 ft) above sea level and with a terrain of rocky stratifications of Galestro (a clay-like sediment).
The region is known as the Colli Aretini (Aretini hills) which encircle the Monti Chianti, historically known and declared in 1716 by the Archduke of Tuscany as a particularly precious wine and olive-producing region. The Petrolo Winery is part of the medieval fiefdom of "Galatrona" and its tower, built atop roman ruins, still exists. In fact, this is where the name for our Torrione wine comes from. The Winery was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 40s and since the middle of the 80s the proprietors have pursued a wine production based exclusively on the highest quality research.
