Tasted by dmatley on 6/11/2009 & rated 91 points: Tasted as fresh and bright as when I first tasted this wine a few years ago. Great acidity and depth. I noticed some bottle variation with this but this particular bottle was a real winner. (1292 views)
Tasted by knops on 5/28/2009 & rated 91 points: Nice, crispt, sparkling and till a lot of life left. (1323 views)

Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 1/1/2009 & rated 89 points: Very nutty nose consistent with an aged sparkler. Not a ton of bubbles, but bubbles are small and delicate. Not rock bottom dry, but at a nice point. Delicious stuff. (1624 views)
Tasted by tctang on 11/26/2008 & rated 89 points: (1579 views)
Tasted by hudamang on 11/9/2008 & rated 88 points: I consumed this in a white wine glass. There was sweet apples on the palate. The after taste left a very apparant apple cider taste. Not a lot of bubbles but high acidity. The bottle looks like the Frank Family "champagne"...same bottle type...Hmmmmm.... (1797 views)
Tasted by slaton on 6/22/2008 & rated 89 points: A more mature golden color than many previous bottles. Showing some secondary aged type aromas on the nose, slightly musty, very small amount of bubbles. Palate shows mostly big-shouldered red pinot noir fruit and autolytic flavors, with a slightly nutty, oxidative sheen. My last bottle; the variation in these has been crazy, but most have been pleasing. (2059 views)
Tasted by carmenem on 6/7/2008 & rated 82 points: very light good party bubbly. too much yeast for some. (2088 views)
Tasted by knops on 5/30/2008 & rated 89 points: nice, seems to have a lot of life left. (2112 views)
Tasted by SDWineLovers on 5/25/2008 & rated 89 points: This is a great sparkling wine. Aromas of oak, vanilla and caramel. This wine has light flavors of stone fruit topped off with oakey vanilla, caramel and green apple. Just when you expect it to hit your palate with sweetness, it rolls into the finish with a pleasant caramel, green apple taste with a hint of dryness. Cameron Hughes has proved himself again. Will definitely buy again before this lot is gone. CP. (2146 views)
Tasted by jfp on 2/1/2008 & rated 90 points: Sticky mousse and fine bubbles with a medium gold color. This is quite bready and has a tangy granny smith apple aroma and flavor on the front end. Gravel comes out in the middle. A very smooth texture on the palate is balanced against clearly defined acidity. Considering the '98 vintage for the bulk of this sparkler, it's going strong at ~10 years. No evidence of decline. Overall, great stuff! At $21, this is a good value. (2604 views)
Tasted by slaton on 1/12/2008: After several corked or off bottles of this in the last couple of months, this was a very nice example and a great crowd pleaser. (2847 views)
Tasted by realale on 12/31/2007: Drinking really well. Only sign of its age is the somewhat reticent carbonation. Nicely balanced between somewhat rich fruit and bracing acidity. Certainly hangs with most California upmarket bubbly. (2763 views)

Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 12/27/2007 & rated 85 points: I agree with most everything posted here. Shared this with friends at home, we opened a Prosecco first and just felt like more bubbles so we popped this. Everyone enjoyed this bubbly, definitely some yeast qualities which I liked, all-in-all a decent bottle. Many posters think the $22 price is a good value, I am not so sure but I don't drink that much Cali Sparkling b/c I can get good Cava for $11. (2798 views)
Tasted by steffenpelz on 12/24/2007: Christmas Eve Dinner and Wine: This wasn't half bad. Clearly not as good as the Champagnes, but certainly not horrible. Good quaffer, especially considering the price. (2783 views)
Tasted by slaton on 12/15/2007 flawed bottle: Corked (2846 views)
Tasted by slaton on 12/8/2007 flawed bottle: Wine Crawl 10: Sparkling Wines (San Francisco, CA): Kind of a dud. Weird green aromas, with high acid. Popz (enologist friend) said serious reduction. Bleah. My 3/3, group's 2/3. Tasted blind. We popped two more bottles of this afterward which confirmed this was a flawed bottle. (3071 views)
Tasted by slaton on 11/29/2007 & rated 90 points: Pinot dominated nose, with some biscuit and toast. Creamy, rich mouthfeel with nice complexity and good acidity for a California sparkler. Lots of bubbles but they are somewhat large, and the interplay between acidity and bubbles isn't as powerful or seamless as in good Champagne. Dosage is a little higher than i'd like. Regardless, this is quite tasty and luxurious, and i'd probably have to spend $35 to find a Champagne that i prefer. 50% pinot noir, 50% chardonnay. (2945 views)
Tasted by dtirsell on 11/26/2007 & rated 90 points: Was pleasantly surprised by the fullness and richness of this sparkling wine. Was not your typical sweet bubbler. Yeasty, rich with clean aftertaste. (3007 views)
Tasted by dmatley on 11/8/2007 & rated 92 points: Very enjoyable. Love the acidity and yeastiness. (3136 views)

Definition of "sparkling wine" at Wikipedia
The typical champagne blend is of three grapes - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. Wines labeled as 'Blanc de Blancs' are by definition all Chardonnay, and wines labeled as 'Blanc de Noirs' contain Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier or both in the blend.

There are how ever three addtional grape varieties planted (Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc) and used in Champagne, they could be called legacy grapes and do not represent significant portion of the grapes used (<0.01%?). It is not permitted to plant more of these varieties.

Vins Pettillant, or sparkling wines, made in the Loire valley, specifically Saumur, are made from Cabernet Franc grapes; the Rosé Pettilant wines are allowed to rest on the skins for a very short time (<=24 hours) which gives them their hint of rose color.

An interesting fact about Bouvet-Ladubay (a Vins Pettillant of Saumur) is that the caves under the facility are made from blocks of limestone having been cut out of the mountain by monks over the centuries. The blocks were then used to build many (all?) of the Grand Chateaux along the Loire. Also, the owner of Bouvet-Ladubay invented a machine for turning entire pallets of bottles daily without human intervention.

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
