This was my epiphany wine circa 1980 which stunned me with its spectacular bouquet and silky texture. Not any more. It's good, it's interesting but clearly well past its best. For a few minutes immediately after opening the bottle, there was a hint of Margauxberry perfume which faintly reminded me of the former bottle. Some excess acidity was distracting, though. It remained a decent good drink for a couple of hours but no more.
OK, so it's starting to fade. When I get to that age, I'll probably be starting to fade as well. But that did not detract from the complex aromas, with its molasses, brown sugar, earth, cherry blossom and cigar box scents. Soft, silky, elegant and polished, it's time to drink up as this delicate beauty is only going to continue slowly dropping fruit from here.
Madeirized nose with prune. A very delicate body, and a clear, rose-rust color at the edges that darkens to a sort of watermelon ruby red at the center. The clarity and lack of sediment was really surprising, especially for this bottle that was not in optimal condition (signs of past seepage with a mid-low shoulder fill). On the entry, a floral perfume wafts up through the sinuses to the nose. Violets. Tastes of subtle red spice (like a hint of red hots or cinnamon gum), mild, evolved fruit, including hints of dark, muted cherry, and dominant tertiary flavors...mushroom, meat, blood, and a touch of soil. Extremely elegant. Linear and focused. It did not evolve much in the glass, nor did the taste unfold as the sip lingered, and in that sense, it lacked a dynamic element. That is, it started as it finished. While perhaps just a little understated, a wonderful, thought provoking evolved and mature Margaux. Bottom line: beautiful, but not all that complex.
Not a perfect bottle. Mid shoulder. Not stored under perfect conditions Mature, brick colour. Still quite dense for its age. Quite vital and lively bouquet. Mature earthy notes of meat, mushrooms, truffles, blood, leather, tobacco, stables and chocolate. Yes, there is some brett. But I like that and it gives an extra dimension to this wine that it needs. Nice mouthfill. Smooth and elegant. Good mature flavours of meat, tobacco and leather. There is a residual sweetness in the back. This wine has a depth. Complex and layered. All parts in harmony, so good balance. Quite long finish. Even if the bottle wasn't in perfect shape it delivers. I want to get my hands on a bottle in good shape 91 - 92 p.
