Wonderful wine. Relieved to find the drink by dates on the web to be remarkably conservative. This wine will still be great a year from now and I’m happy I still have more in my cellar.

I'd been sitting on this bottle for years waiting for the right occasion. Very elegant nose of forest floor and some brambly fruit. Morello cherry with a hint of cocoa dusting on the palate, medium length finish. Surely there is some fading here, but it's still an immensely enjoyable glass. This is my first tasting of Grands Echezeaux, so I have little practical experience to compare against. However, we are a fiercely Burgundian household, and this bottle stood apart from the usual village AOC fare.
Acids were tempered (not muted or absent, just tempered) in balance with the tannins.
Overall, a very pleasant experience, and one that really marked the occasion well.

The 1997 Grands-Echezaux by Mongeard-Mugneret shows smokiness, red pepper, piment, five spice, and dried plum on the nose. The palate is driven by smokiness, a variety of spices, dried plum, and black cherries. Tannins are present and it hits your palate right away. I wouldn't say this is your typical elegant burgundy, but a terrific wine nonetheless and a great pairing to the food.

At Frascati. Fruit profile similar to the 02 cherry pie flavor but maybe not as prominent. Mid-palate structure is not significant but is there and actually holds well. Some nice spice character on the finish. A very solid and enjoyable Burg which has typical Vosne character.
