  • Italian Blinds with Alex and the crew (The Presidio, SF): (blind)

    Medium ruby color, crimson rim.
Savory, earthy, sweet (slight bruised fig development), blackberry and earthy spice. Slight VA - ethyl acetate - which lifts the nose.

Dry, full-bodied, 14% alcohol (actually 13.5%), elevated acid, medium plus tannins - ripe and rounded. Long finish with savory hints of anise, cumin, and lots of development - bruised blackberry fruit. Slight possible new oak - sweetness, vanilla.

    Very nice! This could be:

    - Dolcetto - could be
    - Aglianico - too fruity, not austere
    - Montepulciano - would be less fruity, more earthy
    - Barbera - would be softer, and fruitier.

    Final guess: Dolcetto

Actual: 1997 Gaja Sitorey - Barbera with a bit of Dolcetto
    13.5%

  • UWS (@ JB): Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, oak and rustic flavors. On the palate delicious dark berries, black olives, sweet spices and vanilla. Overall a well balanced, harmonious and beautiful wine. Ready now and no real hurry.

  • This is in a very good place right now. Absolute perfect balance, very good depth of flavor, great aromatics, lovely texture. Perhaps not the most complex red, but the flavors are still haunting me. I had no idea Barbera could reach such heights.
