Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 84.3 pts. and median of 84 pts. in 7 notes)

Tasted by MarcInDSM on 8/28/2008 flawed bottle: Cork got stuck, ruined my rabbit, and created an overall horrible experience. They should have used a screw cap. (675 views)
Tasted by Jazzman on 12/24/2007 & rated 82 points: I didn't enjoy this as much as I did previous bottles. (989 views)
Tasted by cpandmg on 11/30/2007 & rated 85 points: A nice drinking wine. The most surprising thing about this botle was that the rubber cork was almost impossible to remove. (874 views)
Tasted by Thilo on 7/22/2007 & rated 86 points: Color is medium dark garnet. Nose shows dusty sour cherry, spice, and hint of tar. On the palate, juicy sour cherry, wood, and earth combine with fairly significant tannin to make a nice food wine. (1424 views)
Tasted by ParkHill on 7/21/2007 & rated 88 points: Pretty nice, easy drinking wine. Soft, balanced. Light fruit; light tannins. A bit of tar, smoke, coffee and chocolate. While the single vinyard Avignonesi was somewhat bitter and acidic until it was open for 24 hours, this one opens gently and pleasantly. At the $15 range, this is a nice, day-to-day wine. (I did have cork problems. The plastic was weak, so the opener pulled out multiple times.) (1125 views)
Tasted by hutch on 4/25/2007 & rated 83 points: Della Terra Tasting: Nice nose of plums and vanilla, and maybe a hint of clove. the palate doesn't really follow through. A little bitter, and no lushness at all. Fairly light tannins. 82-83 (1251 views)
Tasted by jjclips2 on 4/25/2007 & rated 82 points: Dalle Terre Portfolio (Specialty Imports): Nice aromatics of red plum, cherry, slight earthiness, and tobacco leaves. Very tight and tannic up front with some red cherries hiding. Finishes very earthy along with very dusty tannins. Good, not great. Would probably try again after decanting for a while or in a few years. (1280 views)

About red wine
SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-veh-zeh"). Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.

From the Wine Dictionary of the Epicurious web site:

DOC located in the hilly area around the town of Montepulciano, southeast of Siena in the eastern portion of Italy's TUSCANY region. Its designated zone is precisely the same as the one for VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO DOCG. The exact same grapes are used as well-60 to 80 percent Prugnolo (SANGIOVESE), 10 to 20 percent CANAIOLO, and up to 20 percent of other varieties, although no more than 10 percent white grapes. One of the other red varieties most often used is the Mammolo, which contributes the fragrance of violets to the BOUQUET. The AGING requirement is only 1 year instead of the 2 years required for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines. The result is that Rosso di Montepulciano wines are fruitier, less intense mimics of their big brothers.
