The ’97 Pie Rupestris is everything we ever hoped the ’97 vintage would deliver—but didn’t. Here I found a rich, warm and inviting wine that was perfectly balanced and ready to drink. The nose displayed ripe black cherry, pretty floral tones, brown spice, minerals, dusty soil and undergrowth. It was silky-smooth on the palate, displaying spiced cherry, plum, inner floral tones and hints of contrasting tannin. The finish left nothing to be desired, as fine tannin faded to reveal dark red fruit, spiced orange and inner floral tones. I honestly don’t remember the last time I enjoyed a ’97 Barolo this much.

Nose tight at first, but after 45 min, really started to blossom. Full of floral and tar notes. Palate is intense with earth, dark berries, and after 2 hrs tannins started kicking in adding a lovely bite on the finish.

Aged well. Nice nose, fruit present and good balanced finish. Could age for a few more years but I think either at or slightly past it's peak. Hadn't heard of this producer, label looked more like a inexpensive generic barolo and not widely available in the US. A pleasant surprise. Very good.

From magnum. Decanted for 6 hours. This was a joy to drink. A classic old world Barolo with a nostalgic earthy bouquet and a glorious purity of fruit on the palate. Soft tannins this was delicious with a very lengthy and elegant finish. A wine with soul. Wish I had more in my cellar.

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted for one hour at about 8am.] Dark black fruit nose. Tarty, appealing sour cherries and licorice on the palate. Nice wine.
