  • Pleasing but not a knockout. Beautiful color. Quiet nose. Excellent texture, weight and mouthfeel. Elegant. Drinks beautifully with an hour+ airtime But somehow missing that X factor to launch the character into distinction. Dubious QPR.

  • A little lighter ruby red than the Pisoni...and a touch of funk on opening that went away rather quickly, leaving a nice nose of cherry and maybe a touch of spice. A lot smoother than the Pisoni, and a better balance between fruit and acid...a lot more elegant. Very tasty and it went well with food.

  • (Nepenthe's) Opens with mouth puckering tannins and acids, but settles down (after 20 or so minutes) into something that's quite pleasant if not outstanding. Reticent nose but good flavors of dried red fruits, flowers, and forest. Slightly overboard oaky overcoat that lends a bit of bitterness that never quite recedes. It was also 4 years old, which makes it a pretty old Santa Lucia wine, and I'm not sure that it benefitted from age past age 2. I'd have preferred fresher fruit in this wine rather than the dried fruit of age, especially as the wine is only 4 years old.

I paid $85 for this at the restaurant, and while the wine was fine, nepenthe's has an excellent local list, and I thought that I could have done better with my dollars.

  • Decanted for 30 minutes. Stong aroma cherries. Ruby color. Some heat on the finish. Good balance of fruit, alcohol. Tannins appear to be mild. Drink now.

  • Best after 30 minutes. Flavorful, full bodied robust Lucia style hot pinot. Very enjoyable and a great dinner wine.
