  • Worried about TCA at first (because it's old Prüm, c'mon) but the musty funk that showed on opening cleared pretty quickly to show a spectacular bottle of mature Riesling. There's amazing finesse and depth here with layers of fruit, flower, mineral, smoke, and honeyed botrytis notes all coming together into a seamless whole. It shows sweeter and heavier than I expect an Auslese from '71 to show, but the whole package is thrilling and a joy to drink.

  • "I'm not having a glass of wine; I'm having six. It's called a tasting and it's classy." (Chicago, IL): #07-72. O. W. Loeb & Company Ltd, 15 Jermyn Street, London, SW1. Stellar stuff -- the nose was slightly corky at first but then we realized it was just bottle funk and a bit of that old Prüm smell. Burnished, golden colour with incredible botrytis richness. The oily texture here is almost unheard of in a modern Auslese nowadays. Still vibrant with tons of acidity and fully resolved, caramelly sweetness. Lots of petrol, but this comes off a lot cleaner and without the blue cheese creaminess of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr which I drank a few months ago. I might even like this bottle of Himmelreich more.

  • #07-72 (I think -- the label was hard to read). O. W. Loeb & Company Ltd, 15 Jermyn Street, London, SW1. Done in by a bad cork.
