Dry as a bone. Acidic without overt tannin. Still has varietal nose: oaked choc mint, vanilla essence, confected black fruit. Spices. Empty cedar-wood cigar box. Slight petrochemical overtone. Palate tastes more high-toned — think red apple skin. Drink soon because the tannin has well and truly abated.

Pretty good and well made wine. Heavily oaked but well integrated in the body of fruit and tannin. The delicious factor was somewhat lacking. Lots of licorice on the palate.

Garagiste ************************ Cabernet Dear Friends, I guess people are still interested in Australian wine (at the right price of course). Against my own prediction, the Cap d'Estaing Shiraz offer last week had a bizarrely large response - one of the biggest of the season. It appears to be a wine many of you were keen to try but balked at the normal $30-40 price -at this price it was time to experiment. Due to the enthusiasm, I went back and asked for the sister wine - the Cabernet and I've been obliged (it is considered to be the signature varietal of the Island). I'm still a little surprised that we had a bigger response to the Shiraz than to something like an eclectic high acid/no fruit/oxidized wine from the Savoie but to each his own... As far as the Cabernet goes, it is going to be a house wine choice for many of you. It has what so many domestic choices lack in this price-range - style, depth, clarity and very pure varietal fruit that has a firm leg in the old-world but the flesh, ripeness and color of the new (although it was never technically meant to retail below $30-35). This is another candidate for deal of the year but quantities are not large enough to justify a grander offer than this. Here you go, at the same crazy price as the Shiraz: This parcel has perfect provenance. We have a terrific price on this wine - about the same as in Australia (or less): 2003 Cap d'Estaing Cabernet Sauvignon (Kangaroo Island) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus7910

Nice Cab from down under. Very Cab on the nose, with those green pepper scents, but has good acidity, balance and finish.
