  • TN: Rhone dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Expressive perfectly ripe sweet black fruit driven nose, cassis, white flowers, liquid smoke, a hint of tapenade and garrigue. Exceptional concentration, intense black fruit driven palate impression, silky, cool and polished mouthfeel, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and seamless long finish. Obviously very youthful but perfectly enjoyable. Need another ten years of cellaring to reach the peak.

  • Last of 8 2005 Northern Rhones tasted blind. Gorgeous polished nose of vanilla, blueberry preserves, and white pepper. Very silky textured with a plush mid-palate and deep dark flavors of cassis, blackberry and dried flowers. Long finish and still very youthful. This is ought to be almost immortal and drink well for decades. Group's #2 and my #2 of 8 but it was a virtual dead heat between this and the Chave Hermitage that came in first. The nose on this, the La Landonne and the Chave led me to guess they were the 3 "LaLas" but turned out La Turgue had been saved for later..

  • New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): Souced from vines in the heart of the Côte Blonde with an average vine age of 90 years, this deep ruby/red wine (89% Syrah, 11% Viognier) impresses from the get-go. Intensely aromatic, it offers dark plum, Asian spices, fig, pipe tobacco and briar notes which carry through to the palate. Medium-bodied and with a nice acid backbone, it wraps the flavors with medium-weight, silky tannins. The wine's oak and alcohol are tightly integrated and the middle palate is solid. Perhaps its strongest attribute is its finish, which seams to last forever. Absolutely stunning! Drink now-2030.

  • Thrilling to taste with its sensous textures, perfectly ripe fruit, concentration, length and purity. Big, rich, young and close to primary, this beauty will get better and better with age.

  • This is so good, it's close to being off the charts. With insane levels of concentrated, perfectly ripe, dark, red fruits, flowers, thyme, vanilla bean, licorce and smoke, you are hooked. The wine fills your mouth and coats your palate with the perfect blend of density and lift. How Guigal is able to do this, time and time again is beyond me. I know this is expensive, but it's one of the few pricey treats that is worth the bank.
