It's bottles like this, picked up for $35 and forgotten about, that are later found to be gems that make one forget some of the toads. Outstanding and lively with plenty of time left.

Purchased at the cellar door on release and cellared since. Decanted and drunk over a couple hours.
Dark strawberry, cured meats, some savory dried herbs, and anise on the nose. It's full bodied, structured, and dense, impressive in its structure and depth, with good clarity and detail. Deep and dark with more dark fruits, licorice, cedar, some savory herbs and leather on the palate with a sense of stoniness on the back end. Good acidic balance for this full bodied structure wine helps carry it well. Quite long on the back end, finishing with some resolving but still chewy sangiovese tannins. This is outstanding, and drinking at peak. It's a palate preference for me, but in general I prefer a redder fruited sangiovese. 92 for me, more if you like prefer dark fruited versions of sangiovese.

My last of 3, and the best. Completely smooth, with no heat. Fruit here is subdued, but the leather and dirt and tea and tobacco -- all the good stuff I want in a brunello -- were showing beautifully.

This wine is still big and beautiful. ST says drink now but I say this wine easily has 5 more years in it before it begins its decline. Drink or hold.
